I want to take the opportunity this morning to follow up on last week’s conference call with the team at Ocean Park Asset Management.

Modern Portfolio Theory (MPT) was initially designed with institutional investors in mind. Yes, institutions are liability-driven in their objectives much like individuals, but have very long time horizons and adequate liquidity to meet short term funding needs. MPT works on the premise that only two factors matter in determining the best mix of risky assets, return and variance. According to MPT, the best portfolio is one that has the highest unit of return per unit of risk taken. Small changes to these inputs can lead to widely varying outcomes. Many of which would not be suitable for clients and gives no attention to the return objective required. But for your clients, that additional factor matters. For most of them, it’s a return objective that guarantees a certain lifestyle after they’ve stopped working. It’s with this premise in mind I’m confident that both Ocean Park and Salt Creek are committed to helping your clients meet their long and short-term financial objectives.
