SCI Q3 2018 PERFORMANCE REVIEW
The probability of the economy entering a recession anytime soon seems remote. The Leading Economic Index (LEI) remains strong as the year-over-year change recently posted the highest gain in several years. Another indicator which has one of the best records of predicting recessions, the yield curve, remains positively sloped. Recall that earlier this year there was much concern that the actions of the FED would invert the curve, but that has not happened and looks less likely today. As long as the FED remains measured and the job market remains tight, the term premium should stay positive.
But longer term, without a change in either demographics and/or productivity, growth will slow. Getting more people into the workplace with better ways to increase their output takes time and money. Recent changes to the tax code have helped with the current growth rate but will eventually fade. Capital investment and more people working are required but it will not happen unless there are structural and regulatory changes. Slow growth benefits no one, especially your clients who are counting on some required level of growth to achieve their goals.
