The federal government will reopen today after a few weeks of closed doors.
Ironically the markets will open on a negative note after having risen significantly during the shutdown. The markets seem to favor a scenario where the federal government spends less. There are a lot of smart citizens who favor the same thing. Government spending, for whatever reason, always seems less efficient, less productive and certainly less rational. Some things will never change.
This week will bring a rebalance to the Salt Creek Investors platform. There won’t be blood, but there will be some changes. More changes than we have seen in recent quarters. Why? Good active managers have been more difficult to identify as the potential for active to outperform passive has been shrinking. Valuation levels, volatility and various external factors have caused the narrowing. The recent rally from the Christmas Eve low has helped but we continue to monitor the behavior of our allocation and the components within. Using the analysis of Sortino Investment Analytics (SIA), we have complete confidence in our selection process and its outcomes. The results brought to us each quarter by SIA have undergone the analytical rigor and scrutiny of some of the most reliable practices in our industry today. The results you see in each quarterly rebalance is the outcome of thousands of data points being subjected to thousands of complex computations. It is not a simple undertaking.
The rebalance will occur on Friday, February 1st, and our quarterly follow-up call will take place a few days later. Stay tuned for an announcement regarding the date and time of the call. We appreciate your support and welcome any feedback you may have in making our efforts more in line with the needs of you and your clients.
