Opining frequently about the importance of “trusting the data,” I’ve hoped to convey the necessity of relying upon what we know and what is factual when we make decisions for our clients. When your favorite activity is jumping to conclusions without any evidence, disappointment usually results.
The reality of our business is simply put: many times, the narrative controls the outcome. It also encompasses a wide range of characters. From the narrative of Mr. Madoff to that of Mr. Musk, the story seems reason enough to believe.
Most religions operate under these premises. Believing without seeing works just fine. But for advisors, it’s not a strategy for success. Never mind that Tesla is a “walking insolvency,” or that Amazon trades on how attractive its profit-to-loss ratio is, if the story doesn’t fit the facts then we have a problem. Sell side professionals are masters of the narrative and the financial media can’t get enough of the storytelling. But as professionals charged with being good stewards, we should always confirm that the story isn’t beginning to look like a fairytale. Trust the data.
