That’s good advice from Mr. Buffet…but it’s really hard to follow. Waiting on markets to go on sale has been a costly proposition for those who have not participated in equities. And it takes very little courage to invest in markets that are hitting on most cylinders. Government shutdowns aside, bad economic news and supply side shocks have retreated. But if you’ve missed this rally rip and you’re just waking up, take heart and know that you’ll get an opportunity to participate at better prices sometime in perhaps the near future. Good economic conditions will eventually loosen the discipline of the corporate world. Overpaying for M&A, budgets built upon assumptions that are far too optimistic, issuing far too much debt because of low rates, and rising wages will one day take their toll on valuations that are by most measures expensive.
When this happens, bad news will “let you buy a slice of America’s future at a marked-down price.” That quote, of course, also comes from the investor’s best friend…Mr. Warren Buffet. Patience at this point in the investing cycle seems warranted. I don’t advise trying to make up for what you’ve missed. If you’ve participated in this bull cycle with a diversified and disciplined strategy, you’ve done well. If not, be patient and wait for the mark down.
