We certainly support the idea of ‘free trade.’ Its positive impact on the global economy is well documented. But the ‘free trade’ concept assumes that there is also ‘fair trade.’
Stephen D. Slifer

Free trade only describes part of what makes world trade so valuable. Fair trade is just as important to the formula, and we’ve been hurt by the lack of it for a long time.

Purists are all bent out of shape about the President’s recent tariff proposal. Taken at face value, it does seem to stand at odds with what most smart people would deem rational. In truth, this may be one of those rare times in which economists actually have it right. They are telling us what not to do, since in most situations they are typically indecisive on what to do.

Our President is not the seasoned politician we’ve become accustomed to. He knows his way around a room, but not the way that Bush, Clinton or Obama did. Trump seems quite adept at staking an early claim to a position without painting himself in a corner. In other words, he knows how to backtrack. Don’t be surprised if this initial position on tariffs eventually turns out to be a practical path to free and fair trade.
